Charminar :  The Pride of Hyderabad

In the heart of the Old City stands Hyderabad’s signature milestone, Charminar. It was built in 1591 by King Muhammad Kuli Qutb Shah, the fifth leader of the Qutb Shahi dynasty and furthermore founder of the city of Hyderabad in 1591-92 A.D. Secret Tunnels

As per legends, there is an underground tunnel built to connect the Golconda Fort, which was the former capital of Quli Qutb Shah to Charminar. It is believed that the king built the tunnel as an escape route in case of any siege. The location of the tunnel is still a mystery.

Charminar’s age

The historical age of this landmark is over 450 years, which makes Charminar probably the most established landmark in India. However this landmark is as yet standing tall on the whole its greatness; all hail to those exceptionally old craftsmanship.

Some Interesting Facts about Charminar

  • The four stories of each minaret is marked by carved ring which is visible from outside.
  • To get to the top floor one has to climb 149 flights of steps. All the four minarets are enclosed by 149 flights of steps.
  • Each side of the Minar has a giant arch, which is 11 m wide and 20 m high, measuring from the summit to the plinth.
  • Each arch also has a clock, which was installed in 1889.
  • The Charminar is a monument built with granite and lime mortar in Cazia style of architecture.
  • Within Charminar there lies two one over another.
  • Along with a stone balcony there is a terrace above the two galleries which acts like a roof.
  • The main gallery of the Minar has 45 covered prayer spaces. Just in front, there is a large open space to accommodate more people for prayers on Fridays.
  • The building acquired it’s fame because of the four minarets.
  • These four minarets symbolize and honor Islam’s 1st four Khalifas.
