Lincoln grew up in a poor family and had limited formal education. However, he was a voracious reader and taught himself the law.

He moved to Illinois in 1830 and began practicing law and engaging in local politics.

He was a member of the Whig Party and served in the Illinois state legislature from 1834 to 1842.

In 1846, Lincoln was elected to the US House of Representatives, where he served for one term.
