India’s Massive Lithium Discovery Puts It on the Map for Clean Energy

India, the world’s second-most populous country, has recently discovered an enormous deposit of lithium in its southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh.

This discovery is significant for India, as it seeks to reduce its dependence on imported lithium for its rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market.

As countries worldwide strive to achieve their climate change targets and reduce their carbon footprint, the demand for lithium is expected to surge in the coming years.

The Indian government’s Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) recently announced that it had discovered a massive deposit of lithium in the Mandya district of Karnataka.

The deposit is estimated to be about 14,100 tonnes, which is a significant amount compared to the world’s lithium reserves.

The discovery was made during an exploration for atomic minerals such as uranium and thorium, but the focus shifted to lithium due to its growing demand.

India currently imports most of its lithium, mainly from countries like Australia, Chile, and Argentina.
